Communication is the process of sending and receiving information among people. It could be expressive or receptive. Clear and effective communication is therefore an attitude that anyone who hopes to attain leadership excellence would strife to inculcate and continually improve on the art even before attaining leadership positions at any level. Communication comes in various ways. The most common ways are through speaking, writing, visual image and body language. It could also be on the basis of organization’s relationship (formal or informal), or on the basis of the organizational flow of information. Nonverbal messages, on the other hand, are the primary way that we communicate emotions. They are evident in our facial expression, postures and gestures. Para-verbal communication refers to the messages that we transmit through the tone, pitch, and pacing of our voices. For example, expressions like “I am sorry” may not really be understood to mean what it is intended when it is said in harsh tone.
The process of receiving the communicated message is listening. Listening is a key element in Communication and requires concentration and energy. It involves a psychological connection with the speaker. It also involves a desire and willingness to see things from the speaker’s perspective. At this point, it is required that the listener suspends judgment or evaluation of the message and rather keeps an open mind on it first. Nonverbal listening involves giving full physical attention or being aware of the speaker’s nonverbal messages; while verbal listening involves paying attention to the words and feelings that are being expressed. Just like in passing information, verbal, Nonverbal and Para-verbal listening is essential for a leader to get a true feedback from the followers.
